Guwahati: Assam finance and health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today visited the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) to pay a courtesy call to the COVID-19 infected patients who are recuperating at the hospital.

Sarma, who streamed a video of his visit live on Facebook, was seen interacting with a man, who proclaimed that the Assam model should be adopted all over India. The Minister also took stock of what the patients are being fed and consulted the medical personnel about the nature of their meals.

He then talked directly with the patients, from whom he was only separated by a thin barrier. Urging the patients to keep their spirits high, Sarma advised them to consult with the doctors if they face any problems or issues.

He also talked to some of the medical professionals, covered from head to toe in personal protective equipment (PPE) kits, and asked them about the prevailing situation in the hospital. Praising the cleaning staff of the hospital, Sarma said that only a few of them have been employed as there is always the chance that they will pick up an infection from the patients.

The Minister could also be seen sharing some light moments with some of the patients, and urged the medical personnel to ensure that they are well looked after and their needs taken care of. Biswa Sarma's stroll through the GMCH came on the day when the first-ever Plasma Bank was installed at the medical facility.

A COVID-19 positive doctor has become the first donor of Plasma Bank has been set up at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Guwahati, in the wake of the steady and alarming rise in Covid-19 cases in Assam.

"Glad to share that we've started a Plasma Bank at GMCH. The first convalescent donor is a doctor himself, a COVID-19 patient. My gratitude to Dr Lithikesh for donating his plasma, and to the team who is working on this bank. I encourage cured patients to come forward and donate", Sarma had tweeted in the afternoon.
