TANGLA: NEDA convener and State Finance and Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma shed light in the murder case of former general secretary of the All BTC Minorities Students' Union (ABMSU) Lafikul Islam Ahmed. He termed it as a 'political murder'.

Addressing media persons on the sidelines of an election campaign rally in Udalguri district on Monday, Sarma said, "There must not be any political murder in BTC, the murder of Lafikul Islam was a political murder and we will get in touch with CBI and the Central Government so that the assailants of Lafikul can be identified within 2-3 months. Once such political murders are brought to light, such incidents will not be repeated in BTC and people of the region will feel secure."

He also reiterated that the BharatiyaJanata Party (BJP) would leave no stone unturned to book the assailants. Sarma also publicly said that Lafikul Islam Ahmed was a victim of 'political murder' at an election campaign meeting in Saraibil of Kokrajhar district on Tuesday.

The general secretary of ABMSU, TaisonHussain, while reacting to the development, said, "Neither the family members nor the student body know the progress of the investigation. We have time and again sensed political conspiracy behind the murder of our leader and despite the student body taking up a series of agitation programmes for the past three years in various parts of Assam as well as New Delhi to demand arrest of the perpetrators of the ghastly killing, our pleas fell on deaf ears."

Hussain further said that if the BJP-led State Government had any genuine intention to arrest the perpetrators of the crime, it must act before the BTC polls and the matter must not just remain as mere political dialogue before the polls.

Former general secretary of the All BTC Minorities Students' Union (ABMSU), Lafikul Islam Ahmed was killed by unidentified gunmen on August 1, 2017 at Titaguriin Kokrajhar district. Though initially the case was being handled by the Assam Police, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to investigate the matter and even CID was roped in. Later, the case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
