Hindu Jagaran Mancha Alleges Inclusion of Bangladeshis’ Names in NRC

Our Correspondent

Kokrajhar: Hindu Jagaran Mancha (HJM) Kokrajhar district committee on Saturday staged a two-hour demonstration near the DC office demanding an error-free NRC in Assam. The activists of the Mancha shouted slogans against Bangladeshi Muslims and State NRC Coordinator Pratik Hajela alleging certain loopholes in preparing the draft NRC.

Talking to reporters, the president of Kokrajhar district Hindu Jagaran Mancha, Lachit Boro said the draft NRC in Assam was not free from the inclusion of names of Bangladeshis nationals wherein the names of indigenous people of the country had been left. He said the Mancha wanted a correct NRC in the State so that no Bangladeshi nationals got space.

“As per sources, only 7.22 per cent names of illegal immigrants from neighbouring countries in South Salmara, 8.26 per cent in Dhubri and 7.67 per cent in Karimganj had been excluded from the draft NRC,” he said adding that names of 14.31 per cent indigenous people in Karbi Anglong and 13.25 per cent in Tinsukia district had been left in the draft NRC. He also said the government should ensure foreigner-free NRC and at the same time the indigenous people must not be excluded.

State BJP leader Santosh Tarafder who joined the demonstration said there had been many anomalies in the draft NRC, especially in the minority-dominated areas where a large number of people had included their names in the draft NRC by cheating but these foreign nationals had not been detected or properly verified. He also alleged that many Hindus were left out but doubtful Bangladeshi Muslims had been included in the draft NRC. He demanded proper rectification of the draft NRC.

Meanwhile, the district committee of the Mancha submitted a memorandum to the Union Home Minister through the Kokrajhar DC demanding a correct NRC in Assam.
