JORHAT: The Hindu Yuva Parishad (HYP) burnt the effigy of Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday in protest against the arrest of Republic TV chief editor Arnab Goswami from his house in Mumbai on Wednesday.

Protesting against Arnab Goswami's arrest, HYP Jorhat district unit demanded his unconditional release. HYP Jorhat district unit president Biki Tanti and general secretary Paragjyoti Bora said that the Shiv Sena-led government in Maharashtra had arrested Arnab Goswami because he had highlighted the lawlessness prevailing in Maharashtra.

The HYP condemned the alleged muzzling of the media by the Maharashtra government and said that in Assam too during the Congress and AGP rule, the media had been harassed and muzzled. The HYP sought the urgent framing of a law by the Centre to protect journalists from assault and harassment.
