JAGIROAD: The historic Jonbeel Mela with its unique barter will be held at Jagiroad from January 19 for three days. The mela, enriched with historical barter among hills and plains tribes, has been a symbol of love and affection among the tribes since ancient days. On January 19, the traditional prayer before starting the mela will be solemnised at Deosal temple near here followed by an art exhibition by UNESCO at the mela venue.
The traditional lamp lighting will be done by the president of the Gova Deoraja Jonbeel Mela Unnayan Samity, Soneswar Doloi. The mela flag will be hoisted by Gova Raja Deepsingh Deoraja. A souvenir will be released by the president of Tiwa Sahitya Sabha, Dipendra Nath Bordoloi.
On January 20, the traditional barter will be inaugurated by Morigaon MLA Ramakanta Deuri. The open session will be held at 11.30 am where Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will attend as the chief guest. The historical Raj Darbar will also be held on the day. On January 21, with the community fishing, traditional tax collection and cultural function, the mela will wind up.
