Hojai NGO allegedly siphoned off fund

NAGAON: A Hojai district based NGO allegedly siphoned off fund meant for buying aid for the disabled, allocated by the State as well as Union governments under various welfare schemes for the physically challenged people of the district over the years.

The Government of India and the State government had sanctioned various funds to Hojai based NGO Disable Development Society over the years. But the NGO, instead of distributing aid among the beneficiaries of the district, simply distributed the items among a few by taking a bribe from them and siphoned off a major portion of the allocated fund. Some deprived beneficiaries brought this to the notice of the police.

According to sources, in connection with such irregularities and misappropriation of the fund by the NGO, some deprived beneficiaries lodged FIR against the NGO and its president and secretary in Lanka and Udali police stations separately. The police also registered cases in both police stations. Sources said that the government-sanctioned fund over the years for distribution of life-support items like ear machine, tri-cycle and stick among disabled people of the district.

But the NGO allegedly did not utilize the fund for its exact purpose, rather the NGO distributed the items among a few on taking a bribe of Rs 500 to Rs 1000 from the beneficiaries. Those who were reluctant to pay the demanded bribe were allegedly deprived of those items, the sources added further.
