LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur and Dhemaji district units of All Assam Students' Union (AASU), while maintaining social distancing, took to the streets to protest against the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP) in the wake of the collapse of a guard wall of Subansiri dam due to the impact of rain and landslide.

The activists of the North Lakhimpur regional unit AASU, led by president Pranjit Gogoi and general secretary Punamjyoti Burhagohain, formed a human chain on Friday on the Swahid Bedi premises in North Lakhimpur town. The organization vehemently condemned the NHPC regarding the continuation of the mega dam project while turning a deaf ear to the directives of the Supreme Court and National Green Tribunal and ignoring the agitation of anti-big dam organizations, including the AASU.

The activists of Telahi-Kamalaboria regional unit of AASU led by president Kula Prashad Gogoi and general secretary Dipu Das, also staged demonstration with the same demand at Panigaon Chariali displaying placards with various slogans against the SLHP.

On the other hand, all the regional committees under the Dhemaji district AASU initiated protest programmes at Dhemaji town, Gogamukh, Machkhowa, Simen Chapori, Jonai and Bordoloni demanding the closure of the construction of the mega dam project. Taking part in the protest organized in Dhemaji town, Dhemaji district unit AASU president Dipak Sarmah criticized NHPC regarding its ongoing SLHP construction activities while defying the instructions of the Supreme Court and the expert committee concerned. In this regard, he criticized the role and attitude of the governments at the Centre and in the State too.
