DIBRUGARH: Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday announced the discovery of hydrocarbons in the Namrup Borhat-1 well located in the Dibrugarh district. The exploration was conducted by Oil India Limited (OIL) in a project where the Assam government holds a substantial stake.

Calling it a “proud moment” for the state, CM Sarma highlighted the strategic importance of the discovery, stating that it marks a major step forward in enhancing both energy security and economic resilience. Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Sarma shared, “@OilIndiaLimited has discovered hydrocarbon presence in Namrup Borhat-1 well, a well where the Government of Assam holds a significant stake.” He further added that this successful discovery ensures meaningful returns on oil drilling investments and contributes to strengthening the nation’s overall energy infrastructure.

Notably, Sarma pointed out that this milestone position made Assam the first Indian state to directly produce oil. “It not only validates our exploration efforts but also promises increased revenue and royalty for the state, while ensuring a steady supply of energy for the nation,” he wrote.

The announcement is being hailed as a landmark development that could open new avenues for Assam’s involvement in the national energy grid, while also boosting local economic growth through job creation and infrastructure development.
