Guwahati: The IIT-Guwahati undergraduate student who was a victim of rape on campus has questioned the judgement of Gauhati High Court after the prime accused in the rape case, Utsav Kadam, was granted bail by the high court on the grounds that the male student is a future asset being a talented student pursuing a technical course at IIT-Guwahati.

This decision of the high court has raised many eyebrows and sparked a heated debate among the general public.

The victim of the rape case has called it a travesty of justice and has expressed her fear.

"The High Court has released him on bail saying he is a future asset. If the court is deciding on the fact that he is an IITian, then I am also an IITian," the victim said.

On March 28, the victim was found unconscious in the evening outside her hostel on the IIT-G campus. Upon regaining consciousness, the victim claimed that she was sexually assaulted by unknown seniors. Utsav, along with four others, were taken by the police for questioning.

The victim further added that she has been subjected to mental abuse by her seniors ever since the incident happened.

"They are defaming me openly on WhatsApp groups, Twitter and Instagram. I am seeing the posts by IIT-G students as well. There are a lot of people who are supporting me. The Institute is supporting me, my parents are supporting me. But at the same time, there are people within the institute who do not want me to get justice," she said.

"From the moment this incident occurred till the time Utsav and the others were brought in by the police for questioning, there were a lot of people openly defaming me with my name being mentioned. Even the people who helped me reach the hospital have been threatened. The ones who used to visit me at the hospital were threatened by some seniors. They stopped visiting me," she added.

The victim has also alleged that her friends, too, have been threatened by their seniors.
