BONGAIGAON: Following information, Mererchar police of Bongaigaon district seized a huge amount of illegal timber in the Rangapani area.

Talking to press, OC Mererchar PS said that they seized the timber at a police check post at Rangapani area on the State highway. "The timber was being transported in a truck (AS 19 C 5609) from Chapar to Rangapani. The driver Sahabuddin has been arrested but during interrogation he failed to give information about the owner of the timber. The timber was covered by broken bricks," the OC mentioned.

As the driver stated, he was temporarily hired to take this truck from Chapar to Rangapani. "I used to drive different trucks if hired and in such way, I was hired by the truck owner. It was pre-loaded and they said that it was full of broken bricks. They asked me to take the timber to Rangapani and somebody was supposed to receive the timber at Rangapani," the arrested truck driver said. Police seized the timber and handed it over to the forest department.
