Illicit Liquor Trade in Merapani on the Rise

MERAPANI: Not very long after the State - shaking Wine tragedy in the State, free trade of Laligur has been allegedly received at different sites of Merapani subdivision recently. According to the inputs, Pradip Gupta the notorious Laligur trader of Merapani has been continuing his business of Laligur in the area. The source added that even after sorrowful death of more than a hundred people in the Wine tragedy throughout the State, the dishonest trader has been supplying Laligur to the wine factories of Jorhat and Golaghat district along with Merapani subdivision. It is worth mentioning that during the wine episode the godown of the trader was sealed in the aeigis of Madmukta Bahini Axom and some other social activities in the area.

Mysteriously the sealed godown was released and the businessess of Laligur is continuing freely. Besides, the trader extends his business to Jamuguri, Kachamari, Garanga and even to Chilonijan of Karbianglong district. At the very outset of his business he sold Laligur bringing from Dergaon and Rongamati. Later he brought Laligur from Uttar Pradesh and formed a strong network of Laligur trade in Golaghat district and abroad.

On the other hand , the trade of illicit wine is allegedly going in different places of Pulibagan under Merapani police station equivalently. Talking to the correspondent a source added that after the statewide sensation of Wine tragedy the trade of illicit wine was stopped but it continued again graduallly. Consequently it has resulted into rapid increase of consumers in coming days. Criticizing the neutral role of the district Excise department and the Merapani police station, the concious section of the area demand to look into the matter by the deputy commissioner soon.
