Immersion of Goddess Durga idols conducted smoothly in Dibrugarh

Dibrugarh: Around 78 idols of Goddess Durga were immersed in the designated ghat across the Control Room, embankment and drainage, on Tuesday on the occasion of Vijaya Dashami. No untoward incident was reported.

Young people were seen rejoicing and dancing to music while carrying the idols on vehicles for immersion. However, due to certain restrictions in place this time, the noise of the loudspeakers was kept muffled. Given the significance as well as gravity of the day, most of the commercial establishments chose not to operate for a major part of the day. However, many places were lined with street vendors selling a wide assortment of sweets. People across all faiths were seen buying from those ad hoc shops. That being said, few of those shops ended up encroaching on public space by blocking the footpaths, thus causing much inconvenience to the passers-by. Many people were seen expressing their displeasure over it on various platforms.

Security arrangements were bolstered on the last day of the Durga Puja celebrations to stave off the occurrence of any unpleasant incident. Also, as per sources, not more than 10 people for every Puja committee were allowed to accompany the idol till the very spot of immersion. This move proved quite effective as no instances of drowning - an unfortunate but common sight during immersions happening on a large scale - were reported.

Almost all Puja committees had put extra emphasis on cleanliness this time around. Few even showcased themes in sync with the spirit of environment conservation. However, as a flip side to it, the streets and parts of Dibrugarh Town Protection Dyke were found in a shabby state the next morning. Disposable dishware were found strewn all over the place. Many sections of the public have criticized that aspect. They opined that the committees should have been more persuasive in their drive against filth and environmental degradation.
