Importance of intellectual and industrial rights Highlighted: IQAC

SIVASAGAR: The Internal Quality Assessment Cell (IQAC) of Gargaon College, in collaboration with the teachers’ unit, Gargaon College, successfully organized a popular talk on ‘Industrial and Intellectual Property Rights: Protection and Relevance’ on Wednesday at the academic gallery of the college.

The meeting was presided by the Principal of Gargaon College, Dr. Sabyasachi Mahanta and attended by the faculty members, official staff and students of Gargaon College, along with various dignitaries. The faculty members of some neighbouring colleges like Nazira and Sapekhati College were also present in the event.

The event was kicked off by the Principal of Gargaon College and president of the meeting, Dr. Sabyasachi Mahanta. In his inaugural speech, Dr. Mahanta highlighted the importance of intellectual and industrial rights.

Attending the event as a resource person, Dr. Rupam Saikia, Director, CDC of Dibrugarh University, in his keynote address, gave an overview of industrial and intellectual property rights, their typology and history. He pointed out that in India there were seven other acts that came under the purview of intellectual property rights, which include copyrights act, patent act, and trademark act, among others. Dr. Saikia in his note elaborated about copyrights and patent act. Some other highlights of his speech were how one could claim copyrights and patents, how copyrights were violated, intellectual property rights and academic community. He also made a caveat that if one was not conscious about these rights, a creator might, unfortunately, end up being the violator of intellectual property rights.

The speech was followed by an interactive question-answer session. Dr. Saikia addressed the respective queries of Dr. Dwijen Nath, Dr. Dilip Deka, Bitupal Borgohain and Dr. Surajit Saikia regarding industrial and intellectual property rights. After that, Dr. Sabyasachi Mahanta gave his presidential address wherein he highlighted that there was an urgent need to create more awareness among the academic community regarding the importance of intellectual property rights.
