Importance of mental health highlighted on World Mental Health Day

GOALPARA: World Mental Health Day was observed on Saturday in the 200-bedded Goalpara Civil Hospital campus. The programme was organized by the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP), Goalpara.

With the theme, 'Mental health for all, greater investment greater access', an awareness meeting was also held where Dr. Shyamelendu Das, Superintendent of the hospital, presided over. Dr. Upamoy Nath, nodal officer of DMHP, spoke elaborately on mental illness. Another speaker, Dr. Hrishikesh Kalita also focused on the relevant issue. Different speakers also pointed out that the investment in mental health programmes at the national and international levels had become more important now than ever.

Earlier, a mental health awareness rally was flagged off by Dr Shyamelendu Das. A street play, in order to create awareness about the importance of mental health, was also staged by the professional performers.

Meanwhile, Aminur Zaman, proprietor of Aanaya Drugs Distributor and Brain Cure, which mainly deals with neuropsychiatry medicines in Goalpara town, said, "Everyday we receive at least 10 fresh prescriptions which shows the increasing number of patients in this field."
