In memory of Satyendra Nath Borah (Dipu)

Dipu (Satyen) is the son-in-law of my PehiDipikaHazarika, Retd. Head Mistress of Dergaon Girls High School (Govt.).DipikaPehi is from a famous family with people like Padmashree (Prof.), Atul Chandra Hazarika, PanditKaliramMedhi, famous story-writer SouravChaliha among others. Once, I was invited to Dergaon College UGC Seminar as the keynote speaker; I was surprised when I was encircled by so many professors of that college who presented me with a big book on DipikaPehipublished by 'LekhikaXomaroh' where all her writings and biography was printed elegantly. I bring in Pehi's reference here to highlight that she chose Dipu as her son-in-law for all his qualities of head and heart true to her family's legacy.

Late Satyen was educated in B Barooah College where I was a Lecturer for some time. Later he got his Masters Degree in Industrial Relations from famous M.S. University, Baroda. Dipu joined OIL India in 1971 and rose to the coveted post of Resident Chief Executive at Duliajan for his merit and reputation. He was a very witty and jovial person and was a famous golf player. Even after his retirement, he used to go to Narengi Military Golf Club at Guwahati to play his favourite game. He even invited me there to play golf many times but I could not go. He was a great enthusiast of sports and was a key figure in promoting sports infrastructure and activities for OIL. During his working days, he held many responsibilities as president of National Institute of Personal Management (North-East sector), Advisor of DibrugarhDistrict Sports Association, president of COPS, President of Duliajan Club, contributor to Rural Sports Development in Upper Assam, administrator and player in many PSPB events and Vice President of Guwahati Lawn Tennis Association.

In view of his relations with me, I made a direct flight from Kolkata to Duliajan to attend his daughter's wedding at his house forgetting all other work. And he treated me there as a VIP. The wedding was a big gala - as many people from various parts of India came to attend it in view of his popularity. That was Dipu, the life and soul of many a party.

His love and taste for gardening was unique. I saw many beautiful gardens in his residence in OIL campus. After his retirement, he settled at Barowari area of Guwahati, near my house and as such I often went to visit him, with new books and had various discussions. Dipu left this earth on 30th October and I am terribly shocked. I pray for the peace of his departed soul.
