PATHSALA: "There are around 20 quacks providing dental treatment in various places of Barpeta district, posing as dental surgeons. This is a grave concern for public health and safety as such unauthorized practice may cause serious negative health implications, including spread of various communicable diseases and development of oral cancer. Strict action by authorities and the health department is needed to eradicate such dangerous practice from the district," said Dr Rupam Choudhury, honorary secretary of IDA, Lower Assam Branch, to media persons while addressing a press meet held recently at Barpeta Press Club.

The press meet was organized by Lower Assam Branch of Indian Dental Association. Dr. Choudhury alleged that these quacks were providing dental treatment without having proper training and qualification as prescribed by the Dental Council of India (DCI), the apex body responsible for regulation of dental education and practice in the country. Appreciating the recent move by Barpeta police, who after receiving a complaint from Assam State Dental Council, arrested a prominent quack, Lutfur Rahman, Dr. Choudhury also request Barpeta administration and police to take action against other dental quacks of the district. Along with local member of the Indian Dental Association, Dr Daipayan Dakua and Dr Nazrul Sikdar, around 20 dental surgeons were also present in the press meet.
