Infant Mortality Rate of Assam Continues to be Worst in India

NEW DELHI: The Infant Mortality Rate in Assam is worst among all the other states of the country as per the recent bulletin released by Sample Registration System. The IMR of Assam continues to be at a higher level at the national average with a huge number of infant deaths in the state.

Though the Infant Mortality Rate of Assam shows a higher rate as per the 2019 survey it has somehow brought slight improvement in its IMR this year from the previous year survey. According to the latest bulletin released by SRS (Sample Registration System), Assam recorded at least 40 deaths of children at or before one year of age in the year 2019 at the national average.

IMR or Infant Mortality Rates means death per 1,000 live births of babies under the age of one year. All the states in India have made lots of improvements in IMR during the years 2014 and 2019.

Apart from the state of Assam, Chhattisgarh comes with the same IMR rating as 40 improved from 43 in 2014. But according to the survey by Sample Registration System, Assam has decreased its IMR from the previous time as it was 29 in the year 2014. The two of the states with higher IMR were Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh with 41 and 46 Infant Mortality rates. The state Kerala in 2019 ranks 53 becoming the best state in the country with the lowest Infant Mortality Rate of only 6. On the global ranking, Kerala has made an improvement of 21 places from the 2014 rankings.

The Infant Mortality Rate amongst the northeastern states, Arunachal Pradesh has shown a great change in improvement declining from 37 in 2018 to 29 in the year 2019.

However, the Infant Mortality Rate in the world has decreased from 8.7 million in 1990 to 4.0 million in 2018. In the global ranks, the states of Kerala, Jammu & Kashmir and Delhi has increased IMR showing a faster step of reduction.

The IMR rankings include 185 countries along with 21 Indian major states therefore the data point is calculated are out of 206 areas. The Infant Mortality Rate of states with the highest ranks like Delhi and Kerala can be compared to high income and upper middle-income countries like China and United States.
