Internal Quality Assurance Cell organizes national seminar on ‘Higher Education in India'

DOOMDOOMA: A two-day national seminar on ‘Higher Education in India: Its current trends with special reference to Northeast India’ was organized by Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), Doomdooma College in collaboration with Rotary Club of Doomdooma on Monday and Tuesday at the conference hall of Doomdooma College.

Inaugurating the seminar, Professor Ranjit Tamuli, Vice-Chancellor of Dibrugarh University (DU), said that although a number of changes had been brought into the system, yet higher education had failed to achieve its target. After introduction of semester system in both graduate and postgraduate level, Credit Based Choice System (CBCS) had been introduced in postgraduate level only. So private universities had been encouraged by the government, besides opting for open and distance learning (ODL) mode in both graduate and postgraduate levels. He also had a word of appreciation for Rotary Club of Doomdooma for taking up literacy programme under Rotary India Literacy Mission (RILM) and for taking up a Mathematics and Science teaching programme for the school students under its global grant project called ‘Aviskar’. At the same time, he said that elementary education was the pillar of higher education.

In the beginning, Dr Prakash Jyoti Borthakur, Principal and chairman of the organizing committee, Doomdooma College welcomed the guests. The inaugural function was also attended by Ramesh Goswami, president of the governing body of Doomdooma College, Bina Deka and Dr Abdul Quadir, both former Principals of the college, Dr Aruna Gogoi Baruah and Bina Devi Bordoloi, former Vice-Principals and Arjun Baruah and Dhiren Deka, president and vice-president respectively of Doomdooma Press Club. The seminar, which had three technical sessions on both days, was attended by 47 participants.
