International Day of the World's Indigenous People Observed in Lakhimpur

LAKHIMPUR: Nawa Bihan Samaj (NBS) of Lakhimpur observed the International Day of the World's Indigenous People at Akhda, Kasipathar on Friday in a befitting manner.

The programme was attended by more than 1,000 people belonging to various indigenous tribes within the area. They presented their traditional food items, costumes, ornaments, agriculture and fishing tools through several stalls.

The public meeting organized on the occasion began with George Tirkey in the chair. The purpose of observing the day was explained by Godfrey Hereh, the secretary of the organization. "This year, the theme of the event is indigenous languages. There is a need to promote and preserve the indigenous languages," he said.

Alphonse Kerketta, the speaker of the programme, spoke on the rich and unique culture of indigenous people and its importance in the present situation. State convener of All Adivasi Women Association of Assam (AAWAA), Sangeeta Tete, central committee assistant secretary Sibirna Topno, and various dignitaries were present in the programme. The participants pledged to preserve their own languages.
