International Women's Day celebrated across Assam

KOKRAJHAR: Along with the rest of the world, NERSWN, an NGO based at Kokrajhar celebrated the International Women's Day with a day-long programme at Jwmwiphuri in Kokrajhar on Monday. Through this celebration, the NGO conferred the 'Aijw Falangi Bantha' (Woman vendor award) to inspire the best and successful women vendors to establish their business.

As part of the programme, the executive director of NERSWN NGO, Raju Kr. Narzary hoisted the flag in the morning followed by games and sports for women and open meeting which was chaired by Pratibha Brahma, governing board member and social worker. The key note address was given by Rekha Ramchiary and Pinky Roy of the NGO. Geeta Bhattacharya, independent consultant of gender and development, Guwahati addressed the celebration as chief guest.

Attending the gathering, the Chief Executive Member of BTC, Pramod Boro conveyed his gratitude to all women on the occasion. He said that empowering women and their participation in all fields were equally important. He said that women could perform at par with their male counterparts but they were denied chance in every field earlier, but now they were more empowered in every sector.

Referring to domestic violence in the families, he said that women were the soft target, be it family related matters or superstition like witch hunting. He said that there were several women issues which needed to be resolved. He also said that his council had taken up many innovative schemes and programmes to sustain and empower women in diverse fields.

Meanwhile, the best woman vendor award (Aijw Falangi Bantha) for the year 2021 was conferred to Namee Basumatary of Gaurang Tiniali. The executive director of the NGO, Raju Kr. Narzary felicitated her with traditional Aronai and gave away the citation and cash Rs. 21,000.

Namee Basumatary in her brief speech said she started the business 24 years ago with a meagre amount at Karigaon, a small market attached to NH-31 (C). She started to sell vegetables to run the family and gradually she could install a tea stall at Karigaon market which is now being looked after by husband. Basumatary is successful in her business and she has ensured that their children receive good education. Her two children are now pursuing Master's degree and B.Tech.

Tezpur: Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sonitpur organized International Women's Day on Monday with the theme 'Women in Leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 World'. Dr. PC Deka , Head, in his welcome address explained the significance of observing International Women's Day. KVK, Sonitpur felicitated five women farmers and entrepreneurs for their achievement in different sectors of agriculture. They are Jamini Kalita of Da-Parbatia village, Nivedita Baruah of Rubber Bagan, Monumoti Buragohain Boro of Hugrajuli Lakhima Devi Borah of Besseria and Diapli Mandal of Tinimile, Tezpur on the occasion of International Women's Day. They also shared their success stories with all the participants.

Roji Chutia, Subject Matter Specialist (Agronomy) of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sonitpur made the participants aware about the role of women in agriculture. Ambia Begum, Head Mistress, Akabasti Miri LP School, Balipara acted as a resource person and delivered a lecture on women empowerment and importance of Women's Day. Students of the Rural Agricultural Work Experience Programme (RAWEP) of Assam Agricultural University stationed at KVK, Sonitpur were also associated with the programme. They organized small cultural programmes like group song and skit related to women's problems. More than 50 participants participated in this programme.

MORIGAON: Along with the rest of the country, the International Women's day was celebrated by SAKHI-ONE STOP centre under Social Welfare department at Morigaon on Monday. The co-ordinator of SAKHI-ONE STOP centre, Subansiri Das felicitated District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO) Santosh Kutum(in-charge), CDPO Manika Kakaty Bharali, and CDPO Pranamika Phukan, with traditional gamusa in presence of 30 women of the town. The day was celebrated with in a small scale which was attended by social worker Binita Bez . DSWO Santosh Kutum spoke at length in the programme.

DEMOW: Under the patronage of Demow Sanmilit Mahila Samaj, the International Women's Day was observed in Demow Jyoti-Bishnu Cultural Building on Monday. The programme started with cleanliness drive on Monday morning which was followed by lighting of earthen lamp by Ratna Chetia. Runu Dutta Borah hoisted the flag in the programme. A procession was taken out on the occasion of International Women's Day which was flagged off by Chaya Rani Borgohain. In the afternoon an open session was organized where many dignitaries were present.
