Interstate Tension Simmers Down as Assam CM Directs Police to Withdraw FIR Against Mizoram MP Vanlalvena

GUWAHATI: It seems like the war of words between the two North-East states, Assam and Mizoram is finally cooling down a bit. On Monday, finally the Assam Chief Minister Himanta BiswaSarma decided to direct state police to take down the FIR lodged against Mizoram Rajya Sabha MP K Vanlalvena for his threatening remarks to the national media over the Assam-Mizoram border fiasco.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma termed this as a "goodwill gesture" following MP Zoramthanga expressed his desire to resolve the border dispute on an amicable note. However, he also added that FIR filed against six Mizoram government officials shall continue to be probed for their alleged role in the bloody fiasco along the Assam-Mizoram border at Lailapur in Cachar district.

It may be mentioned that, CM Sarma on his Twitter handle lauded the undaunted efforts of Mizoram CM Zoramthanga in resolving the border dispute between the two Northeastern states.

He tweeted saying, "I have noted statements in media by Honble CM @ZoramthangaCM wherein he has expressed his desire to settle the border dispute amicably. Assam always wants to keep the spirit of North East alive. We are committed to ensuring peace along our borders."

He further said that Assam is also committed to ensuring peace along its borders.

"To take this goodwill gesture ahead, I have directed @assampolice to withdraw FIR against K. Vanlalvena , Honble MP, Rajya Sabha from Mizoram. However cases against other accused police officers will be pursued," Sarma tweeted.

Informing about the fulfillment of the Assam CM directive, Assam ADGP, GP Singh tweeted, Reference @assampolice Dholai PS Case of Cachar district against @mizorampolice and other unknown persons, action against Sri K. Vanlalvena, Honble MP, Rajya Sabha from Mizoram has been abated."

It may also be noted that, a special team of Assam Police went to New Delhi last week and summoned Vanlalvena for interrogation after his alleged statement threatening to kill more personnel if they cross over to Mizoram.

Furthermore, the state police on July 28 last, also issued separate summons to six officials of the Mizoram government, including the deputy commissioner and superintendent of the police of Kolasib district, and ordered them to appear at Dholai police station on Monday.

Reportedly, the Mizoram Chief Secretary Lalnunmawia Chuango on Sunday stated that the Mizoram the government was ready to withdraw the FIR filed against CM Himanta Biswa Sarma as that was not approved by the Mizoram CM Zoramthanga.
