HAFLONG: Demanding immediate bifurcation of Dima Hasao, erstwhile N C Hills, the Indigenous People's Forum (IPF) held a sit-in in front the office of the Deputy Commissioner on Thursday at Haflong.

The Indigenous People's Forum (IPF) has been demanding the bifurcation of the Dima Hasao district with separate autonomous councils under clause (c) of the sub-paragraph (3) of paragraph 1 and sub-paragraph (1 ) of paragraph 2 of articles 244(2) & 275(1) of the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India.

They shouted slogans and later they submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Assam. Their demands include bifurcation of the Dima Hasao, erstwhile North Cachar Hills district, with a separate Autonomous Council under clause (c) of the sub-paragraph (3) of Paragraph-1, and sub-paragraph (1) of paragraph 2 of Articles 244 (2)& 275(1) of the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India; not to include the areas inhabited by the non-Dimasa tribes within the proposed Dima Hasao Territorial Council or any political set-up whose name is in Dimasa dialect; to demarcate the boundaries of the new district being created as per the proposed map of the Indigenous People's Forum (IPF); to name the new district being created as the North Cachar Hills Tribals District and to create a separate MLA constituency for the new district being created. S Jeme, working president of IPF, while talking to media persons, said that they hoped that the Chief Minister would consider their demands.
