TINSUKIA: In a significant achievement for railway electrification, IRCON has completed the statutory inspection of PCEE and conducted a full-speed trial on February 19-20, on the Mariani-Simaluguri-Dibrugarh route (151 RKM & 193 TKM) in the Tinsukia Division of Northeast Frontier Railway.

Additionally, the Simaluguri Traction Substation (TSS) was successfully back-charged on February 18.

This milestone is a key step towards achieving 100% railway electrification under Mission 100% Electrification. The electrification project aims to introduce 25kV Electric Traction operations, improving operational efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, and promoting a more eco-friendly railway system in the region.

With this progress, the Tinsukia Division is set to move towards a greener, faster, and more sustainable railway network.

Meanwhile, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is working hard to introduce electric trains in southern Assam and Tripura as soon as possible. Earlier this month, a successful trial run of the first goods train with an electric locomotive was conducted between Badarpur station in southern Assam and Jirania station in Tripura, located 15 km north of Agartala.

Officials stated that necessary infrastructural works, including electrification, have been completed in these regions. Following the successful operation of additional goods trains with electric locomotives, passenger trains will soon begin running on this route. The NFR official expressed hope that passenger services with electric locomotives will begin within one to two months.

Currently, Tripura is well connected by express trains to major cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Patna, but all passenger trains are powered by diesel engines. The introduction of electric-powered passenger trains will mark a significant step towards greener and more efficient rail services in the region.
