Jailed KMSS Leader Akhil Gogoi Named as President of Raijor Dal

GUWAHATI: Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) chief Akhil Gogoi has been named the president of the newly formed political party in Assam, "Raijor Dal".

The announcement came after the newly floated party's first-ever state convention came to an end in Moran.

Meanwhile, Dr Hiren Gogoi has been appointed as the chief advisor of the party and Bhasco D Saikia, Kabindra Chetia Phukan, and Jitul Deka have been inducted as the working presidents of the party.

The general secretaries include Hussain Mohammad Shahjahan, Rubul Das, Giri Shankar Goswami, Ankur Saikia, Alok Nath, Lohit Gogoi, Dibas Phukon and Jahiruddin Laskar.

Earlier, on January 7, the Gauhati High Court rejected the bail plea of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi.

Gogoi's lawyer, Krishna Gogoi speaking to media said, "We are not sure on what ground the bail was rejected as we are yet to receive the judgement copy."

"The hearing started at 10:30 AM and the judgement came against Gogoi now we are waiting for the judgement copy at 12:00 noon, " he added.

On the other hand, interacting with media persons, Assam State Health and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi was jailed for his Maoist links and not for his anti-CAA movement.

Gogoi was arrested in December 2019 for leading a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act outside the Jorhat deputy commissioner's office. The NIA said that Gogoi has been booked for "waging a war against the nation", conspiracy and rioting.

Notably, the mother of Akhil Gogoi said, "We do not have fate in the Assam government any more. What was the crime of my son?"

"The Assam government is scared of him as he is vocal," she added.

Gogoi has been in jail since December 2019 on charges of instigating violence during anti-CAA agitation in Assam.

Briefing the media, Gogoi's lawyer Krishna Gogoi said that they are likely to move the Supreme Court to challenge Gauhati High Court's decision.
