JAMUGURIHAT: A press meet was organized at the office of the Baresohoriya Bhaona Committee here on Wednesday by various socio-cultural organizations of the greater Jamugurihat area to condemn the public remark on Jamugurihat and its cultural arena, made by Gahan Chandra Mahanta, retired vice-principal of Darrang College, in a meeting held at Abhijatri Kala Kendra on June 1.
Gahan Chandra Mahanta had attended an inaugural session of a free computer coaching centre by Nirmal Pragyajyoti, an NGO. Addressing the inaugural session, Mahanta expressed his disregard for the socio-cultural and religious fields of Jamugurihat. He said that there is no practice of religious arts and culture in the villages of Jamugurihat now except rubbing lime-oil in the namghars of Jamugurihat and changing the colours of tins. He had also added that the present generation had failed to attract the attention of the new and emerging generation in this field.
Criticizing the literary field of Jamugurihat, Mahanta had said that there were many poets in Jamugurihat now but those poets don’t even know the names of the famous poets of Assam. He further criticized the organizational patterns of various jubilees of many educational institutions of Jamugurihat which have observed centenary, platinum and diamond jubilees so far with active involvement of politicians, local MLA, and MP.
The press meet on Wednesday criticizing Mahanta’s remarks was organized by Baresohoriya Bhaona Committee, Jamuguri branch of Axam Xahitya Xabha, Bapuji Bhawan Natya Samaj, Naduar Nagarik Mancha, Jamuguri Kabi Mancha, Abhijatri Kala Kendra, besides others. Organizations of Jamugurihat demanded a public apology from Gahan Chandra Mahanta within 48 hours failing which they said that legal action will be taken against him.
The press meet was addressed by Bhaba Goswami, Jagat Saikia, Pradumna Hazarika, Shailen Barkataky, Khagen Hazarika, and Saranam Deva Nath among others. At the end of the press meet, the attendees asked Gahan Chandra Mahanta to study the socio-cultural, religious, and literary history of Jamugurihat.
