DIBRUGARH: A joint committee has been constituted by the district administration, headed by an official of the Forest Division, to look into the causes of flood and erosion in the district and what effective measures are to be taken for its control.

The committee comprises Executive Engineer of Water Resources Department and an Assistant Commissioner. It will submit its report within a month after a field study on issues like extraction of river silt and the Water Resource Department's miserable failure to complete the anti-flood and anti-erosion projects on time.

Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha, while presiding over the meeting held at the DC's conference room on Thursday to discuss about protection of Dibrugarh town Protection Dyke, prevention of erosion in the Brahmaputra and other rivers in the district and to check illegal digging of silt from the river bed, directed the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Rajiv Thapha to prepare a comprehensive plan to evict all illegal settlers from the Brahmaputra River bank.

Earlier, on request of DC Jha, the president of Ban aru Khonia Protirodh Sangrami Mancha Binod Kedia pointed out that illegal collection of river silt and Water Resource Department's failure in completion of anti-flood and anti-erosion projects before monsoon were the chief causes of flood and erosion in different places in the district as well as causes for major threat to Dibrugarh Town Protection Dyke.

The meeting was attended by, amongst others, District Development Commissioner Sanjay Dutta, Assistant Commissioner Joy Shibani and Additional Deputy Commissioners Rajiv Thapha and Ranjit Konwar.
