JORHAT: A youth allegedly died in army custody in the Borholla area of Titabar Assembly Constituency in Jorhat district on Monday. The deceased has been identified as Jayanta Bora, son of Lila Bora of Kakodonga Habi Gaon Block No. 5 under Borholla police station in the district. He was about 30 years old.

Deputy Commissioner of Jorhat, Roshni Aparanji Korati has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the matter and entrusted Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Tapon Gohain to conduct the probe.

"I have ordered a magisterial inquiry and entrusted ADC Tapon Gohain to conduct the probe. Gohain has been directed to submit the report within 10 days," Korati said.

She added the Army from 244 Field Regiment based in Charaideo came with a requisition informing about the presence of a member of ULFA-I/NSCN-IM at Borholla in Titabor area and also requested to provide a police representative to conduct a search operation for the militant. Accordingly, a police team went to assist the army team to conduct the search operation in Kakodonga area. During search operation, the Army apprehended the suspected ULFA-I militant Jayanta Bora and took him to Borholla Police Station in their vehicle.

"On reaching Borholla police station, the Army team reported that the person was feeling uneasy and hence he was immediately admitted at Borholla community health centre. The attending doctor provided preliminary treatment and referred him to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital where he was declared dead," Korati said. AASU Borholla regional unit has demanded a high-level inquiry and submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioner on Monday.
