Jorhat: Fire Rages Throughout the Night in Marwari Patti

JORHAT: A fire broke out at the Marwari Patti region of the Jorhat district of Assam on the night of December 21, Wednesday.

The massive inferno raged throughout the night and was not completely extinguished till the morning hours of December 23, Thursday. The presence of several cooking gas cylinders in the locality further aggravated the raging inferno.

The cause of the fire has not been known yet. Apart from the fire and emergency services of the state from several locations in the Jorhat district, emergency vehicles from the Indian Air Force also joined in the damage control efforts.

According to ground reports, the fire started in one of the many business establishments in the locality and soon spread to nearby shops. Many of these businesses also had their godowns filled with inflammable material including plastic products and LPG cylinders. These materials proved to be hindrances in the way of the firefighters.

Several of these businesses also doubled up as residences of the owners leading to an increase in the losses in the fire. Many of the buildings of the region have been completely gutted. Reports suggest that more than 50 shops and business establishments have been completely damaged in this fire.

The Marwari Patti region of the district is a very important commercial hub for not only the district of Jorhat but also the nearby regions including parts of the Sivasagar and Majluli districts. It is also located in a very important part of Jorhat town meaning that the traffic in the entire region will remain affected. The electricity supply has also been disconnected in the region to avoid any possible untoward incident.

The Deputy Commissioner of the Jorhat district has ordered an inquiry into the matter.

More details are awaited regarding the incident.
