NAZIRA: A group of socially conscious citizens from Kalgochhia in Barpeta district extended a helping hand to students affected by the recent floods in Upper Assam by distributing educational materials at two schools in Sivasagar and Nazira.
Led by retired Chemistry professors of Navjyoti College, Kalgochhia, Abu Bakkar Siddique and Surman Ali, the team included retired principal of Chakla Higher Secondary School Ismail Hussain, Principal of Namti Piyali Phukan College Dr Dhrubajyoti Nath, college professor and Kalgochhia native Dr Shohuj Zaman, Professor Dr Putul Ngate and others. On August 20, the team distributed school bags, notebooks, paper, pencils, pens and other educational materials among students of Rangpur Jatiya Vidya Niketan at Darikapar in Sivasagar and Nazira Uttaran Jatiya Vidyalaya at Bahgora in Nazira.
The initiative received support from former Principal of Jorhat College and noted intellectual Dr Debabrata Sharma, former headmaster and chief convenor of the Adivasi Mother Tongue Demand Committee Kiran Kumar Tanti, former general secretary of the All Assam Ravidas Samaj Rajesh Ravidas, Akash Das of Jatiya Bhawan and a large group of NSS students from Namti Swahid Piyali Phukan College.
The visiting team travelled several hundred kilometres from Kalgochhia, overcoming considerable difficulties to reach the flood-affected schools and extend support to the students.
The two schools expressed their appreciation and gratitude to the members of the Kalgochhia citizens’ group for their gesture of solidarity and compassion towards flood-affected families and students.
After distributing the materials, the team visited the flood-ravaged areas of Santak, Nepalikuthi and Holangkotoni, which were severely affected by the devastating floods of the Dikhow River, and took stock of the problems faced by local residents
