Kamrup (M) Reports 37 Cases of Covid-19, Highest in Assam

Assam Finance and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has been at the forefront of the state's battle against the Covid-19 on May 21 announced that Kamrup (Metro), with 37 cases, has reported the highest number of cases.

The districtwise break-up of the Covid-19 cases in Assam, as announced by the Health Minister at a presser here earlier today, are as follows:

Kamrup (M): 37 patients

Hojai: 23 patients

Kamrup (R): 16

Cachar: 14

Golaghat: 14

Nagaon: 12

Morigaon: 10

Nalbari: 9

Goalpara: 7

Jorhat: 7

Bongaigaon: 6

Dhubri: 5

Karimganj: 5

Hailakandi: 4

Kokrajhar: 5

Karbi Anglong: 3

Biswanath: 3

Tinsukia: 3

Baksa: 2

Sonitpur: 2

Chirang: 1

Lakhimpur: 1

Majuli: 1

Mankachar South Salmara: 1

Sivasagar: 1

Barpeta, Charaideo, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibruharh, Udalguri, and West Karbi Anglong districts, Sarma announced, are yet to be touched by the contagion. "So, till now, 8 districts out of 33 have not been affected by the Covid-19 Cases", Sarma told media.

Addressing the media, Sarma also announced the source of the cases that have been detected in the State thus far. After the Tablight Jamaat incident in New Delhi's Tablighi Jamaat, 36 cases came to light, Sarma said, adding that another 32 cases were detected after contact tracing. A further 112 carriers were detected among the stranded citizens who returned to Assam after the easing of lockdown restrictions.

However, the history of 9 cases detected in the state is yet to be determined, Sarma informed. Of those cases, 4 each are from Kamrup (Metro) and Bongaigaon and a single case is from the Kamrup-Rural, Sarma added.

It may be mentioned here that Assam has seen a sharp spike in cases ever since the Centre lifted the ban on inter-state travel. As of now, 191 cases have been detected, out of which 4 deaths have been reported.
