Silchar: In a startling incident from Kanakpur Part 2, an alleged habitual thief who was caught red-handed by residents on Wednesday morning later managed to escape from police custody, raising serious questions about the handling of suspects by local law enforcement. The accused, Sujit Das, a resident of Maa Durga Lane in Kanakpur, was reportedly apprehended by locals while attempting a theft in the early hours of the day. Residents claimed that Das had a history of substance abuse and petty thefts in the very neighbourhood where he lived in a rented house.
“We’ve suspected him for a while. This time, we caught him in the act,” a local resident told Barak Bulletin. Following his capture, Das was handed over to the Rangirkhari Town Outpost. Residents also searched his rented accommodation and reportedly recovered stolen items, including four mobile phones, seven SD cards, and two gold bangles, which were believed to have been taken from nearby homes.
However, the situation took a dramatic turn later in the day when Das allegedly escaped from police custody. According to sources, he shoved a Cachar Police officer and fled the outpost. By Wednesday night, he remained absconding. Despite eyewitness accounts and community reports, Cachar Police denied any such incident. “We have received no report of any theft, nor has there been any escape from custody,” a police source stated.
The incident has sparked concerns among locals about security and police accountability, especially given the alleged escape of a repeat offender and the apparent lack of official acknowledgment from law enforcement authorities.
