TANGLA: Kokrajhar MP and chief of Gana Surakha Party (GSP), Naba Kumar Sarania, who previously had termed the Governor's Rule in BTC as constitutional and legal as per the 6th Schedule of the Constitution, has now demanded holding of polls before October 27 and no further extension of Governer's Rule in the council to 'save democracy' in BTC.

Sarania said the people of the Bodo belt were batting for a change in guard in the forthcoming general elections to the BTC but if the polls were postponed and Governor's Rule extended, it would not be in interest of the democratic nation.

"There has been no message from the Election Commission regarding any tentative date for polls but it is only Assam Finance and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma making statements in media so the polls must not be delayed and be held before October 28," he said.

Earlier, Himanta Biswa Sarma had said that it was 'not feasible to hold polls any time soon' and it was most likely to be pushed further to December. Pertinently, the polls were scheduled to be held on April 4 but it had to be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Naba Kumar Sarania-led Gana Suraksha Party, which is backing a number of independent candidates in the BTC council polls, claims to represent the majority of non-Bodo population comprising more than 70 per cent in the Bodo belt.
