Krishi Vigyan Kendra Dibrugarh Conducts Field Day on 'Kufri Jyoti'

TINSUKIA: The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK)Dibrugarh conducted field day of potato variety Kufri Jyoti at the No.3 Charaihabi gaon under Khowang development block on Friday as a successful effort by enhancing production of improved variety of potato on the riverine side of River Burhidihing.

While inaugurating and addressing the gathering, Hemchandra Saikia, the course director of the programme mentioned that the village was selected due to its recurrent vulnerability towards severe flood for 2-3 times a year along with poor economic condition of its farmers. Demonstration of improved variety Kufri Jyoti was a part of increasing the cropping intensity from mono cropping to double or multiple cropping in a year along with due support for commercial crop cultivation and income enhancement, Saikia said.

Speaking as chief guest, the district agricultural officer of Dibrugarh, Soumindra Goswami urged the beneficiary farmers to preserve best quality of seed of this potato variety for its cultivation in the next season, besides highlighting about its more improved method of cultivation and its scientific preservation. Altogether 35 beneficiary farmers participated in the programme.

Farmers cultivating this potato variety opined that although they had failed to apply water in the various stages of crop growth due to lack of irrigation facility, still they were able to get good result from this Kufri Jyoti variety of potato over their traditional variety and found this potato variety very suitable. They thanked the Kendra for their continuous and timely help and support. The programme was also supported by three final year students of AAU Jorhat- Kongkona Borah, Kongkona Chintey, Nilakshi Talukdar and technical assistant Manash Gogoi.
