Guwahati: Assam Agricultural University (AAU) has received national recognition for its new rice variety, ‘Labanya’ (TTB-AAU-Dhan-41), with the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority (PPVFRA) granting it a Certificate of Registration on July 7, 2025.
The certificate gives AAU exclusive rights to produce, sell, and distribute Labanya under the Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Act, 2001. The rice combines the nutrition of traditional black rice with higher yield and better adaptability for commercial farming.
Labanya yields 4.5–5 tonnes per hectare, compared to just 1.5–2 tonnes for traditional black rice. It has a lower glycemic index, cooks faster, and has aromatic grains, making it a healthy choice for daily diets. Rich in antioxidants, flavonoids, amino acids, and minerals, it also offers higher milling quality with about 60% head rice recovery.
AAU officials say the variety is ideal for making gluten-free flour, bakery products, and traditional dishes. Farmers in Assam, Punjab, and Daman & Diu are already growing it, with the Daman and Diu government actively promoting its cultivation.
Labanya was launched in the market even before formal registration, with exclusive marketing rights given to a local entrepreneur. It is now sold in over 18 states, and over 30% of customers are repeat buyers.
The PPVFRA rights will last six years, with the option to extend for another nine years, ensuring long-term benefits for AAU and farming communities.
