LAKHIMPUR: "The story of the incomparable valour and patriotism of Lachit Barphukan has inspired the people of Assam year after year," said Ashim Kumar Bhattacharya, the Deputy Commissioner of Dhemaji. He said so while delivering the welcome address in the ceremonial programme, organized in order to celebrate the 400th birth anniversary of Bir Lachit Barphukan on Thursday.

The programme was held in the Kachari Maidaan, located in the Dhemaji district headquarter, in the presence of a vast crowd. Bhattacharya further said, "The academic, intellectual, cultural and sporting programmes organized for a week by the Dhemaji district administration, in association with the government departments and public of the district, have impacted positively upon the society. These programmes have made it possible to spread the patriotic ideology of the Battle of Saraighat among the common people."

Attending the event as appointed speaker, noted scholar of Tai culture, Dr Puspa Gogoi said, "If there had been no Lachit, the existence of the indigenous communities of the Northeast region, including the Khasis, Nagas and Mizos, would have not been there. It should be realized by all. All people of the Northeast region should study the history of Lachit Barphukan."

In his deliberation, Dr Gogoi further laid stress on the study of the history written in the Tai language to know the vivid history of Assam. He also remarked that Lachit had not beheaded his maternal uncle, but he had beheaded the engineer, who showed dereliction while constructing the fort (garh) to prevent the invading enemies in a critical time.

Another intellectual figure Umesh Chetia, Dhemaji Zila Parishad chairperson Mohan Gogoi, District Development Commissioner Arup Pathak also spoke on the occasion. The Deputy Commissioner, attendees of the programme paid rich tribute to Lachit Barphukan by garlanding his statue.

On the other hand, the concluding ceremony of the week-long programmes organized by the Dhemaji district administration to celebrate the 400th birth anniversary of Lachit Barphukan was held on Friday. During the event, the lecture delivered by Prime Minister Narendra Modi while taking part in the grand ceremony organized on this occasion by the Government of Assam in New Delhi, was live telecast.
