LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district body of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) on Thursday submitted a memorandum to Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner Dr Jeevan B regarding unabated encroachment in the Assam-Arunachal border areas belonging to the district. By submitting the memorandum, the organization demanded the DC to stop the encroachment immediately. The memorandum, countersigned by district president Pulok Borah and secretary Dhanmoni Dutta, stated that the construction of concrete houses and establishing of new villages by encroaching the land of Assam from across the border had been seen at Bandardewa, Moinajuli of Hurmutty along with other border places of the district. "Many invaluable trees have been reduced to destruction by cutting them down. In addition, construction work by the encroachers has been going on for several days just nearby the border police outpost," the memorandum further stated. In this regard, the organization alleged of violation of the Supreme Court's order to maintain 'status quo' regarding inter-state border dispute. Under such circumstances, the organization demanded the DC to stop such encroachment within 24 hours or to face strong agitation. A delegation of the district AASU visited the disputed border area at Moinajuli and Golajuli on Thursday and took stock of the situation there.
