Lakhimpur all set to conduct 2nd Sub-National Polio Vaccination Programme

LAKHIMPUR: Children upto 5 years will be administered polio drops in Lakhimpur district on Sunday as part of 2nd Sub-National Polio Vaccination Programme. In addition to Sunday, the programme will continue on next two days, that is, on May 29 and May 30. In this connection, Lakhimpur district administration and Health Department are all set for the smooth conduct of the programme.

For this purpose, 873 session centres have been set up in the district while 168 booth supervisors, 29 sectoral supervisors, 14 block supervisors and 4 district supervisors have been given the responsibility to provide polio drops to children less than 5 years of age through booth, house-to-house, mobile and transit teams.

The District Task Force meeting in Lakhimpur regarding the 2nd Sub-National Polio Vaccination Programme was held on Friday in the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office. The meeting was chaired by Deputy Commissioner Sumit Sattawan while District Immunization Officer Bharati Baruah explained all about the immunization programme. The Health Department of the district has appealed to the people to bring their children under five years to the session centre to have them polio drops administered

The last case of polio in India was reported on January 13, 2011 from Howrah, West Bengal. According to Health Department, polio is still endemic in two countries, viz- Afghanistan and Pakistan. Though India has been certified “polio-free” at present, the risk of wild poliovirus importation or the emergence of vaccine-derived polioviruses persists until global eradication, which highlights the need for maintaining high population immunity and sensitive surveillance in the state due to close proximity with Pakistan.
