Lakhimpur citizens raise their voice against CAA, demand immediate scrapping

LAKHIMPUR: Citizens of Lakhimpur district protested against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019. They unanimously demanded the BJP-led government in the Centre to take immediate step to scrap the controversial Act.

The citizens of the district strongly raised this demand while taking part in the stir initiated by the Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and 30 ethnic organizations opposing the CAA synchronizing with the initiative taken by the central committee of the largest students’ organization of the State. Notably, all the regional units under Lakhimpur district AASU, such as North Lakhimpur, Telahi Kamalaboria, Dhalpur, Narayanpur, Kherajkhat border, Bihpuriya, Bongalmora, Laluk, Phoolbari, Naoboicha, Pachim Ranganadi, Boginadi, Kadam, Chaoldhowa, Ghilamora, Dhakuakhana regional units organized citizens’ sit-in in their respective jurisdiction on Monday.

Large number of citizens across the district were seen spontaneously taking part in the stir in order to demand the Union Government to immediately scrap the Act, terming it as a tremendous threat to the demography, culture, literature of the State, communally motivated and against the ideals of the Constitution of India and the very spirit of the Assam Accord.

The Lakhimpur regional AASU unit organized this citizens’ sit-in in front of the Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner’s office. In addition to the several hundred common people of North Lakhimpur, the family members of the martyrs and oppressed activists of the Anti-Foreigners Movement of Assam, the members of the Lakhimpur Senior Citizens’ Association, Teachers’ Association, retired College Teachers’ Association, Hindugaon Mahila Samiti and Nalkata-Bowalguri Mahila Samiti participated in the stir. The protesters were seen rocking the environment by shouting various slogans opposing the Act during the demonstration. They also shouted slogans demanding the Act. Taking part in the protest, Lakhimpur AASU general secretary Dhanmoni Dutta and North Lakhimpur regional AASU president Pranjit Gogoi came down heavily against the Act and the Central and State governments.

Dhamoni Dutta severely criticized Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for advocating in favour of the controversial Act despite State-wide mass protest against it. A host of prominent citizens also became vocal against the Act and the BJP-led governments in the protest venue.

On the other hand, the Lakhimpur district unit of Anusuchita Jati Yuba Chatra Parishad staged stir in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in association with common people to oppose the CAA. Staging sit-in, the organization raised demand to scrap the Act and to release all those anti-CAA agitators who have been arrested by Assam Police till date. The people of larger Bogolijan area also initiated demonstration at the Bogolijan Rangamancha premises opposing the Act.
