Lakhimpur Congress activists protest against Citizenship Amendment Act

A CORRESPONDENT

LAKHIMPUR: Thousands of Congress activists staged a massive protest in Lakhimpur demanding the scrapping of the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019.

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee initiated its ‘Astitwa Rakshyar Jan-Jagaran Jatra’ in North Lakhimpur town under the auspices of the Lakhimpur District Congress Committee (LDCC), vehemently opposing the contentious Act. Taking part in the stir, thousands of Congress activists rocked the environment of North Lakhimpur town by shouting various slogans against the Act and slamming the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in the State, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and State Finance Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.

In connection with the stir, a protest meeting, titled as Jana-jagaran Sabha, was organized at Tyag Kshetra wherein APCC president Ripun Borah, former minister Rockybul Hussain, LDCC president Dr. Joy Prakash Das and general secretary Gangajyoti Tayegam came down heavily on the BJP-led governments regarding the issue. Ripun Borah said that the Congress would never allow BJP to turn Assam into a dumping ground of Bangladeshis by enforcing the CAA. He declared that the Congress would intensify massive agitation until and unless the Act was scrapped. He expressed vehement resentment against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for their U-turn from the poll promises and vested politics adapted in support of foreigners through the CAA by violating the Assam Accord. Rockybul Hussain severely criticized Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma for his provocative advocacy in favour of the Act. The Congress also demanded to grant tribal status to the six communities of the State and increase in the wage of tea garden workers.
