LAKHIMPUR: As per the notification already announced by the Assam State Election Commission, the polling for the 80 Municipal Boards across the State will be held on Sunday. In Lakhimpur district, the election will be held to a total of 4 municipal boards, viz -North Lakhimpur Municipal Board (NLMB), Bihpuria Municipal Board (BMB), Narayanpur Municipal Board (NMB) and Dhakuakhana Municipal Board (DMB).
The Lakhimpur Election District and Dhakuakhana subdivisional administrations are all set to conduct the polling process smoothly in a free and fair environment. In this connection, security personnel have already been deployed in the poll bound areas to prevent the likelihood of any vitiative role played by criminal outfits, exercise of muscle power, political violence during the electioneering period.
In the district, the highest number of 56 candidates are in the fray in NLMB which comprises of 21 wards. Of these wards, 9 wards are unreserved, 11 wards are reserved for women (1 for Scheduled Caste woman) while 1 ward is reserved for Scheduled Tribe candidate. A total of 45,766 voters will exercise their franchise in the election under this municipal board. Among them, 22,480 are male voters while 23,286 are female voters. The district administration has set up 47 polling stations to hold the election to this civic body. In the 11 wards under Bihpuria Municipal Board, a total of 27 candidates are in contest. Of this civic body, 4 wards are unreserved, 5 wards are reserved for women while 1 out of them is reserved for SC woman and 1 ward is reserved for ST candidate. The number of voters in this municipal board is 9,147 with 4,569 male voters and 4,578 female voters. A total of 11 polling stations have been set up in this municipal board for the election.
On the other hand, a total of 23 candidates are in fray in the ten wards under Narayanpur Municipal Board. In this municipal board, 4 wards are unreserved, 1 ward is reserved for SC candidate and 5 wards are reserved for women while 1 of them is reserved for ST woman. A total of 4,272 voters, 2,102 male voters and 2170 female voters, will cast votes at 10 polling stations under this civic body. In the 10 wards under Dhakuakhana Municipal Board, a total of 22 candidates are in contest. Four wards under this municipal board are unreserved while 3 wards are reserved for women, one is reserved for woman belonging to ST and one is reserved for woman belonging to SC. A total of 10,105 voters, 5,073 male voters and 5,032 female voters will exercise their francise at 20 polling stations under this municipal board.
Under Lakhimpur Election District, the polling will be held at 66 polling stations out of 68 urban polling stations set up in North Lakhimpur, Bihpuria and Narayanpur Municipal Boards. The BJP candidate has won the Ward No. 13 seats under NLMB being uncontested, as a result of which the polling will not be conducted at the two polling stations of this ward. The district administration has engaged a total of 264 personnel — 66 Presiding Officers, 66 First Polling Officers, 66 Second Polling Officers and 66 Third Polling Officers — to conduct the polling process in North Lakhimpur, Bihpuria and Narayanpur Municipal Boards.
Similarly, the Dhakuakhana subdivisional administration has engaged 20 Presiding Officers, 20 First Polling Officers, 20 Second Polling Officers and 20 Third Polling Officers, total of 80 personnel, to conduct the election in Dhakuakhana Municipal Board. The engaged officers already arrived at their respective polling stations with the electioneering materials and took over the charges there. Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur Sumit Sattawan, SP Bedanta Madhav Hazarika and Dhakuakhana SDO (Civil) Gurnel Singh has appealed to the voters, political parties and all concerned to extend due cooperation to hold the election smoothly on Sunday. The counting of the votes of the election will be held on March 9 and the result will be declared on the same day.
