Lakhimpur Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti opposes eviction of street vendors by the district administration

LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district unit of the Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti (MASS) has strongly opposed the eviction of street vendors by the district administration. Notably, the Lakhimpur district administration on May 24 evicted the street vendors of North Lakhimpur town. Reacting over the issue, Lakhimpur MASS stated that with that eviction, a full stop was given on the livelihood of the poor street vendors who lived from hand-to-mouth by initiating a small business.

With regard to the issue, the organization submitted a memorandum to the Lakhimpur DC stating that the eviction had violated the Street Vendor’s Livelihood Protection Act, 2014. The memorandum stated that the organization filed a writ petition in the High Court in 2015 opposing such evictions and the High Court served an order in favour of the street vendors sending a copy of the order to the district administration. The case is still in the proceeding of the High Court.

The organization through the memorandum appealed to the DC to provide justice to the street vendors. The DC, as informed by Raju Singha, the secretary of Lakhimpur MASS, gave word to the organization regarding the protection of the livelihood of the street vendors as per the recommendations of the Act.
