LAKHIMPUR: In the Assam Legislative Assembly Election-2021, Lakhimpur witnessed a big poll battle in all four LACs of the district. As per mandate, BJP-led alliance (Bhartiya Janata Party, Asom Gana Parishad, United People's Party Liberal and Sanmilito Gana Shakti, Asom Alliance) emerged victorious in three Legislative Assembly Constituencies (LACs) out of four.

BJP candidates won the No. 109 Bihpuriya LAC, No. 111 Lakhimpur LAC and 112 Dhakuakhana LAC. On the other hand, Congress-led Grand Alliance won one LAC of the district. Congress candidate Bharat Chandra Narah won the No. 110 Naiboicha LAC seat.

In the election, political observers paid special attention to the No. 109 Bihpuriya LAC of the district, because Chief Minister Sarbanada Sonowal-supported BJP candidate Dr Amiya Kumar Bhuyan and All India Congress Committee secretary-cum-former MLA Bhupen Kumar Borah were in the fray in the constituency. Moreover, Prime Minister Narendra Modi campaigned in support of the BJP candidates by addressing a big public rally organized at Narayanpur under the LAC. At last, Dr Amiya Kumar Bhuyan won the seat by a margin of 10,178 votes. He secured a total of 58,979 votes while his nearest contestant, Congress candidate Bhupen Kumar Borah grabbed 48,801 votes.

On the other hand, former Minister of the Congress government, Bharat Chandra Narah turned the poll fight fierce by contesting from No. 110 Naiboicha LAC. Narah gave up his native constituency- No. 112 Dhakuakhana LAC in this election to new comer Padma Losan Doley, who was the general secretary of Takam Mising Students' Union (TMPK), the Mising community students' organization. In Naoboicha constituency, Bharat Chandra Narah chalked out a political equation to win the seat with the support of Mising community organizations. Following this, Bharat Chandra Narah defeated Raijor Dal candidate Azizur Rahman by a margin of 3,791 votes and managed to pave his way to Dispur after 10 years. In this constituency, Azizur Rahman gave a neck-to-neck fight to Bharat Chandra Narah, as a result of which the Congress candidate could manage to secure only 52,905 votes while Azizur Rahman won 49,292 votes.

The BJP gave up this LAC to its alliance partner AGP. AGP candidate Jayanta Khaond secured the third position in the LAC by securing only 35,279 votes.

Similarly, a big fight was seen in the Lakhimpur district headquarter constituency, that is No. 111 Lakhimpur LAC. In this LAC, NEDA convener Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma supported BJP candidate Manab Deka has won the seat by defeating Congress candidate Dr. Joy Prakash Das. The BJP candidate defeated the Congress candidate by a margin of 3036 votes only. According to the verdict, Manab Deka has grabbed 70387 votes and Dr. Joy Prakash Das has secured 67,351 votes. The most significant point in the election in this LAC is the defeat of incumbent AGP MLA Utpal Dutta. Dutta who was the MLA of the constituency for five terms, has lost the seat with poor achievement of votes by securing only 12,486 votes.

On the other hand, the political observer of the State had serious interest in the poll fight that took place in the No. 112 Dhakuakhana LAC (ST) of the district. In this constituency, existing State Panchayat and Rural Development Minister-cum-BJP candidate Naba Kumar Doley, who is regarded to be a candidate supported by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, was in fray against Congress candidate Padma Losan Doley. On the other hand, some Mising community organizations withdrew their support to Naba Kumar Doley before the election due to political conflict. Along with the people opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019, several factors of politics stood against Naba Kumar Doley. Despite such circumstances, the BJP candidat once again grabbed the victory in No. 112 Dhakuakhana LAC. With this victory, Naba Kumar Doley has won the seat for three consecutive terms. In this election, he defeated Padma Losan Doley by a margin of 9695 votes. Naba Kumar Doley has secured a total of 86,382 votes while Padma Losan Doley has achieved 76,786 votes.

With the declaration of poll result of the 15th Assam Legislative Assembly Election on May 2 by the Election Commission of India, stage is already set to form the next government in the State for next five years. According to the poll verdict, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has achieved majority to form the government at Dispur by grabbing 75 seats out of 126 seats across the State. On the other hand, Congress-led Grand Alliance (Mahajoot) is set to play the role of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly for the next five years by securing 50 Legislative Assembly constituencies.
