LAKHIMPUR: A heinous crime committed by unidentified miscreants who killed a Lakhimpur youth in a moving train and injured his father has come to light. The youth has been identified as Kusharam Hazarika (18), son of Dilip Hazarika (45), permanent residents of Dirgha Maj-Gaon under Boginadi Police Station of the district. A gang of unidentified miscreants killed the youth, throwing him from a moving train in Odisha and injured his father severely after physically assaulting him.
The incident took place on April 27 when the youth obstructed the gang from looting in the train during their journey to Kerala in search of jobs. At present, the father of the youth is fighting for life in the Katak Chief Hospital in Odisha. The Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has vehemently condemned the murder of the youth and expressed condolence to the bereaved family.
Lakhimpur AASU president Pulok Jyoti Borah and secretary Dhanmoni Dutta expressed strong resentment over prevalent attacks and murders of railway passengers from Assam in other States. They criticized the dereliction of the Railway Police and Odisha Police with strong terms for their failure in ensuring security to the life and property of railway passengers from Assam.
On Friday, a delegation of Lakhimpur AASU, led by the district secretary, called on the bereaved family members of the youth. The organization extended financial assistance, amounting to Rs. 20,000 to the family. The organization demanded Lakhimpur district administration, Assam Government and the Railway Department to compensate the family and to take steps to manage advanced treatment for the injured father. The youth was meanwhile cremated in Odisha. The organization further demanded the State Government to initiate effective steps to ensure the security of Assamese people in other States.
