Lakhs of devotees and visitors throng Baresohoriya Bhaona site in Jamugurihat

JAMUGURIHAT: The entire atmosphere of Jamugurihat became spiritual and an unprecedented festivity gripped the hearts of lakhs of devotees and visitors on the third day of the historic Baresohoriya Bhaona.

The third day’s programme began with pratah prasanga followed by Aai Matri Samaroha. State Agriculture Minister Atul Bora inaugurated the Aai Matri Samaroha. Inaugurating the Samaroha, minister Bora conveyed best wishes to women on the occasion of International Women’s Day and traced the glorious history of the bhaona festival. Nearly 5,000 women performed naam in 21 kholas after the Samaroha at a time.

Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma had inaugurated the second day of the bhaona festival in presence of an august gathering. Inaugurating the spiritual as well as cultural festival, Chief Minister Sarma had made a humble appeal to the people to live unitedly, carrying forward the teachings of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva. Union Minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan, State ministers Dr Ranoj Pegu, Pijush Hazarika, Ashok Singhal, Bimal Bora along with other dignitaries attended the event. A total of 21 bhaonas were performed in 21 kholas by different bhaona teams on Wednesday.

The second’s day programme began with pratah prasanga followed by release of the souvenir. Dr. Dhruba Jyoti Bora, eminent litterateur and former president of Axam Xahitya Xabha, released the memorabilia Barechahar compiled on the occasion of the 226th edition of the Baresohoriya Bhaona festival in a meeting held in the temporary auditorium on Tuesday.

Releasing the memorabilia, Dr Bora traces origin of the bhaona culture and appealed to people to join hands towards preservation and conservation of the cultural heritage. Dr. Swadhinata Mahanta, former president of Sonitpur Zila Sahitya Sabha, addressed the gathering as a distinguished guest in the programme. Dwijen Das, president of the magazine sub-committee, forwarded a welcome address.

The inaugural session was attended by Padma Hazarika, president of Baresohoriya Bhaona committee, Bhaba Goswami, working president, Nitya Bora, eminent journalist, retired professor Purneswar Nath, besides other dignitaries.

After the programme, books compiled by Prem Narayan Goswami, Lohit Nath, Marami Sarma and Bhupen Bordoloi were released in a book release ceremony. Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, Waterways and AYUSH Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the permanent Baresohoriya Bhaona project site constructed at a cost of Rs 26 crore. After this, the Union Minister inaugurated the first day of the bhaona festival. Inaugurating the bhaona festival, Sonowal spoke about the rich cultural and religious heritage of India and Assam as well. He appealed to the young generation to work dedicatedly to place Assamese culture and tradition in the global platform.

The bhaona festival will conclude on Thursday with a cultural programme which will be inaugurated by Dr Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya, chief advisor of AASU. Angaraag Papon Mahanta will perform a cultural programme.
