DOOMDOOMA: Dr Parash Pratim Kataki (37), a popular doctor and a physician of NRHM (National Rural Health Mission) breathed his last at a private hospital of Guwahati on Saturday. He was airlifted to Guwahati by an Air ambulance on Friday evening from Assam Medical College & Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh by creating a special green corridor with the help extended by the State government.

Dr Kataki who was admitted to AMCH a few days back for treatment of COVID infection had to be shifted under the supervision of a team of specialist doctors to Guwahati as his condition turned critical. But in spite of all these efforts, he succumbed to post COVID complications on the following day. His death has cast a pall of gloom because of the service he had rendered in the villages and in the tea gardens of this vast tea belt surrounding Doomdooma on behalf of NRHM to cope with the COVID pandemic. In a condolence message, State Health Minister Keshab Mahanta on Saturday said, "The death of Dr Parash Pratim Kataki, the doctor of Doomdooma Rupaisiding, Tinsukia District, who was in the front row in the fight against COVID in the State, has made us very sad. The young doctor served the COVID victims of the rural areas with a dedicated attitude and himself got infected with the COVID and left us prematurely."

Dr Kataki who was born at Doomdooma on May 01, 1984, is the youngest son of Late Robin Kataki, former Principal, Doomdooma Hoonlal HS School and Anu Kataki.

After qualifying MBBS from Gauhati Medical College, he did his post-graduation in Anaesthesiology from Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh. He started his career as a Medical Officer in Ketatong in Margherita. Later, he served as an Anaesthetist in Tata Referral Hospital, Chabua for some time before joining as a Physician of NRHM, Tinsukia district. He was also a consultant Anaesthetist at Dr Bora's Nursing Home & Research Centre, Rupaisiding. He is survived by his mother, one brother, wife Advocate Pallabi Baruah and two and a half years old son Rik. His last rites were performed at Rupaisiding Smashan on Saturday midnight.

Many organisations including IMA (Indian Medical Association), Doomdooma Branch, Tinsukia Zila Xahitya Xabha, Doomdooma Sakha Xahitya Xabha, Doomdooma Press Club, Doomdooma Hoonlal HS School also condoled his death.
