SILCHAR: The saffron brigade received a big jolt as the Left-leaning advocates outperformed their pro-RSS colleagues in the Silchar Bar Association election.
CPM leader advocate Dulal Mitra defeated senior BJP leader advocate, Anil Chandra Dey in a straight fight for the post of the president while another Left-leaning as well as former Congress leader, Niladri Roy retained his general secretary chair for three consecutive terms defeating Abdul Hai Laskar, a Congress-leaning advocate. The pro-RSS advocate, Rajib Kumar Nath finished third in the race for the post of general secretary. Another pro-Hindu advocate, Dharmananda Deb was defeated by Abhijit Kar for the post of joint secretary while Tinku Baidya defeated Sumita Shome Poddar in the fight for vice president chair.
Silchar Bar Association election was held on Saturday and the result was declared late night. The saffron brigade started the campaign with a visible edge but finally finished the race with a poor performance. Particularly, the defeat of Anil Chandra Dey to Dulal Mitra was a shocker as the former was a senior BJP leader. Mitra, the secretary of the Silchar Hailakandi unit of the CPM, won 312 votes while Dey finished with 239 votes. On the other, Niladri Roy won the general secretary’s post with a considerable margin.
