TEZPUR: The Addiction Treatment Facility (DAM) at LGB Regional Institute of Mental Health (LGBRIMH), Tezpur, commemorated the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking with an engaging and insightful programme under the theme ‘Breaking the Chain: Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery for All.’ Held at the indoor hall of the institute, the event witnessed enthusiastic participation from OPD and IPD patients, hospital staff, and students.

The day began with a story-writing activity, where 10 patients shared their recovery narratives, providing a platform for self-expression and reinforcing awareness about the importance of rehabilitation. The formal session commenced at the OPD Hall with a welcome by the anchor who introduced the day’s theme and schedule. Minakhi Gogoi, nursing staff, delivered the inaugural address, emphasizing the day’s significance and the collective need to combat drug abuse.

Dr Sagar Mukherjee, Senior Resident at DAM, delivered a compelling address on drug trafficking, shedding light on its dangers and the legal framework under the NDPS Act. His talk was followed by an interactive session with Dr Kushal Tamuli, Deputy Medical Superintendent, who encouraged patients to reflect on personal change and progress.

Dr Elamurugu, Assistant Professor (PSW), presented a special lecture on the social, psychological, and medical consequences of drug abuse, while also highlighting LGBRIMH’s ongoing efforts in rehabilitation and community reintegration.

A deeply moving recovery storytelling session, moderated by Dr Anurag Roy and Surajeet Verma, featured two patients courageously recounting their journeys from addiction to recovery, offering hope and inspiration to fellow patients. Adding a fun and educational dimension, a quiz competition was conducted by Archita and the nursing team, covering topics like drug awareness, HIV/HCV, and legal knowledge. The event saw active participation, with winners receiving prizes to encourage learning and engagement.

Dr Bipul Sharma and Dr Debahuti Sabhapandit, AMS, at LGBRIMH, addressed the audience, stressing the need for early intervention, community support, and a holistic, multidisciplinary approach to addiction treatment.

An open forum allowed patients to voice their experiences, including a powerful account of one individual’s path to recovery from illicit drug use.

The programme concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Jupitora Kakoti, who expressed gratitude to all speakers, organizers, and participants. Refreshments were served, rounding off a day of awareness, empowerment, and collective resolve in the fight against drug abuse.
