LAKHIMPUR: Along with the rest of the globe, the Lakhimpur district committees of All India Democratic Students’ Organization (AIDSO), All India Democratic Youths’ Organization (AIDYO) and All India Mahila Sanskritik Sangathan (AIMSS) jointly observed the International Mother Language Day on Tuesday.
The event was celebrated by these organizations at the public places near Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital. The agenda of the event began with paying of floral tribute to the martyrs by AIDSO State president Prajjal Dev, AIDYO State secretary Birinchi Pegu, AIMSS Lakhimpur district conveners Juthika Doley and Lily Doley and other members of the organizations.
It was followed by a seminar on this year’s theme of the event ‘Multilingual Education: A Necessity to Transform Education’. Attending the programme as resource person, Prajjal Dev said, “The celebration of International Mother Language Day in the true sense is the need of the hour at a time when the government at the Centre has attempted to impose Hindi language upon the non-Hindi speaking people. Such linguistic aggression results in conflict in the society. Under such circumstances, the then East Pakistan, which is Bangladesh at present, agitated against Pakistan strongly protesting the imposition of Urdu language. Thus, the people of Bangladesh protected their mother language. This revolution is the source of inspiration. The UNESCO designated February 21 as International Mother Language Day by recognizing the sacrifice of the people of East Pakistan.”
