Guwahati: To curb the spread of the COVID-19, the residents of Amguri in Sivasagar district of Assam have decided to impose a 'self-lockdown' to counter the threat posed by the viral COVID-19 disease. This lockdown, which has been brought into effect today, shall last for 3 days.

The local trade bodies are leading from the front in declaring the lockdown in the area that has recently witnessed a spike in COVID-19 cases in the area in the midst of the virus outbreak. The decision for clamping a complete lockdown was first considered by the Traders' Association for containing the spread of the virus.

"The locals of the district have decided that the rise in COVID-19 cases in the area warrants a lockdown. Thus, they have decided to keep the shops closed so that there is minimal contact among the people. The lockdown was initially conceptualized by trade bodies and in these 3 days, they have decided to keep their shops closed. This measure has been adopted in Amguri due to a rise in COVID-19 cases over the past few days", Abhijit Sinha, the SP of Sivasagar divulged to The Sentinel Digital. "Meanwhile, we are observing the daily curfews from 7 pm to 7 am. Additionally, the ban on inter-district travel is also being strictly observed", Sinha further added.

This "self-lockdown" has been declared at a time when the cases of the COVID-19 in Assam have continued to rise at a steady and alarming rate, promoting several districts to resort to lockdown. In this phase of the virus spread, Kamrup (Metro) in its entirety has been put under lockdown by the district administration.

Assam government has announced that all inter-district movement of individuals will be strictly barred with effect from July 22 until further orders. The Assam government has also allowed the movement of medical and last rite emergencies only with written permission from the Deputy Commissioner of the originating district.
