MARIYANI: Local people protested against the inability of the forest department to contain the situation in Mariyani of Jorhat where a rhinoceros was stuck in a bog on Wednesday.

The local people complained that the officials of the forest department of Jorhat were not able to recover the rhinoceros which was stuck for over twelve hours. Before the officials could arrive at the location and tranquilise the animal, it managed to escape from the mud and make its way towards a populated locality. A large number of the public watching the animal were able to escape safely out of sheer luck.

Following this incident, the local people protested and engaged in sloganeering saying ‘DFO Murdabad’ and ‘Forest Department Murdabad’. Although the rescue team comprising officials from the Assam State Zoo arrived at the location in Mariyani, they were kept waiting for the team from the forest department to bring the necessary equipment for the job. The local people also alleged that the department lacks the necessary equipment for the job, which caused the delay and put the lives of people as well as the animal at risk.
